Pallet shipping cost

The costs for shipping pallets by using the services of freight forwarders contain various components. The biggest are, on one hand, the goods and, on the other hand, the route. The price of shipping pallets is depending on the measurements and weight of the cargo. However, the pallet measurements and weight (20-25kg) are to be counted in, as well. The route and way of transport are influencing the pallet shipping costs, too. This is why, we at Freightfinders offer you the possibility of comparing different means of transport to find the best price for your pallet transport.

Here are the components for the calculation of pallet transports:

  1.    Collecting the general cargo from the client
  2. + Handling at the freight forwarder’s storehouse
  3. + Transport costs
  4. + Handling at the destination storehouse
  5. + Delivery costs
  6. = Total cost

 Types of pallets

When shipping goods on pallets, you will find different types of pallets. There are basically three types: one-way pallets, euro pallets and stillage.

One-way Pallet Transport

One-way pallets are mostly out of wood, plastic, or corrugated cardboard. Usually, they are less solid and, therefore, cannot carry goods that are too heavy. Because of their nature, they can only be used once. The advantage of these pallets is, however, that they are available in different measurements.

Euro Pallet Transport

The euro pallet is the most common choice for shipping pallets. They are standardised (120cm x 80cm x 15cm) and it is, hence, easy to organise stowage plans with them. Moreover, they can be used multiple times and are very solid. They are marked with the abbreviation EPAL, which stands for the European Pallet Association, who is responsible for the quality management of euro pallets. Usually, the pallets can be lent on pawn for the transport, which is mostly around 20-30€ per pallet. The amount of pawn being refunded depends on the condition of the pallet, because, if there is any damage, the pallet has to be repaired.

Measurements:

  • Length: 120cm
  • Width: 80cm
  • Height: 15cm

Stillage Pallet Transport

The stillage functions equal to a normal pallet. It basically is a pallet box made out of steal. Hence, it is ideal for carrying smaller goods, as piece goods cannot fall off.

GS1 classified pallets

Usually, a pool of reusable pallets is used for transports. Their quality is classified by the GS1 to establish a standard for the nature of pallets and, thereby, granting a fair interchange.

The pallets are classified as follows:

  • New: These pallets are new and can be used for any field of application.
  • Class A: A-classified pallets can show little signs of usage and must not be soiled.
  • Class B: These can be used just like class-A pallets. The wood is mostly darkened and there are signs of usage.
  • Class C: These pallets can only be used for storage or transport and have distinct signs of usage.
  • Unusable: Pallets classified as unusable have to be repaired by licenced companies. Afterwards, they can be classified as class-A again.

Load restraint and packaging of pallet transports

Load restraint is probably the most important point, when transporting pallets. Load restraint does not only protect delicate goods, but also people and other goods during the transport. There are several ways of securing goods to the pallet and protecting the goods from outside influences through proper packaging.

The following materials are mostly used for pallet packaging:

  • Hard cardboard
  • Cushioning/filling
  • Edge protection
  • Foil
  • Tensioning straps

For one, hard cardboard cover can be used. This should be stuffed with cushioning or filling material to e.g. protect the goods from collisions. Moreover, edge protection can be used, as well. As pallets are usually exposed to wind and weather, they should be covered in foil to make the cargo waterproof. Finally, use a tensioning strap to secure the cargo on the pallet. Please, make sure that your freight is protected perfectly during the transport.

Special transports

Pallets are suitable for various kinds of goods, as they are solid and easy to transport. For this reason, especially bulky goods are being transported on pallets. Bulky goods are usually goods that are heavier than 31,5 kg, or have excess measurements. This, however, does not only apply e.g. to companies sending small machines, but also to private persons, shipping e.g. their washing machine, because of relocation. As a rough guide: everything that fits on a euro pallet can be transported on it. If, however, your machines are too big, inform yourself about the different types of special transports.
